This course provides a deep dive into classic texts of the Western Canon, offering students an opportunity to engage with some of the most influential works in Western literature. Through the study of these foundational texts, students will not only explore the themes, characters, and historical contexts of these works but will also hone their critical analysis and academic writing skills.

The course begins by introducing students to key works from a range of literary genres, including epic poetry, drama, philosophy, and fiction, drawn from authors such as Homer, Shakespeare, Dante, Milton, and Austen, among others. Students will examine how these texts have shaped Western thought and culture, while exploring their relevance in contemporary society. They will analyze the literary techniques used by these authors, from narrative structure to symbolism, and investigate how these techniques contribute to the texts' lasting impact.

As students engage with these works, they will develop critical thinking skills, learning to interpret complex texts from multiple perspectives. The course will teach students how to break down intricate arguments, identify central themes, and evaluate the effectiveness of literary devices. By engaging with these works in a thoughtful and methodical way, students will improve their ability to think analytically and engage in sophisticated discussions about literature.

In parallel, the course emphasizes the development of strong academic writing skills. Students will learn how to craft well-organized essays that present clear, well-supported arguments. Writing assignments will focus on developing students’ ability to analyze texts in depth, formulating thesis statements, and structuring arguments in a coherent and persuasive manner. Special attention will be given to refining writing style, incorporating evidence from the texts, and citing sources correctly.

Throughout the course, students will participate in discussions, group projects, and peer review sessions to enhance their understanding of the texts and improve their writing skills. By the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of the Western literary tradition, developed advanced analytical and writing skills, and gained the ability to engage in thoughtful literary criticism and academic discourse.
